Fuck yea. Absolutely a 5/5 album. Super glad Shawn is also into it. There is so much good hip hop from this era. Also, their latest album is one of the best of that decade.

2024-04-19 06:07:35 +0000 UTCShawn's openness to hip-hop is so refreshing. This album's a classic, but it was almost jarring to revisit. I love a lot of modern hip-hop, so going back to an album like this is almost like playing an old Nintendo game. You see it for how fundamental it is, even if that means it's a little more plodding and on-the-nose than every wild, branching genre A Tribe Called Quest inspired in the 30 years since.

Q Tip truly is one of the greatest and most influential producers of all time. I had a feeling you'd like the more chill and conscious side of hip hop. You'd probably really enjoy De La Soul and Digable Planets too. All of Tribe's other albums are great as well, aside from The Love Movement but even that one is pretty solid. That last album they put out right before Phife passed away was especially special. My favs on this one though are Excursions, Buggin Out and Vibes & Stuff. Keep up the great work Shawn!

2024-04-18 23:39:09 +0000 UTCThe jazz bassist is Ron Carter (q-tip shouts him out at the end of the first track I think). It's safe to call Ron Carter an elder statesman of jazz. He judged my high school jazz band at the Essentially Ellington competition in New York. He was brutally honest with the bass players. A real badass with an incredible career.

2024-04-18 17:50:49 +0000 UTCGreat album. Been a fan of Tribe ever since I first heard of them. You definitely have to check out their 2016 album and some De La Soul albums too. My favorite De La record is probably Buhloone Mindstate but you canβt go wrong with any of the first 4 or so. 4/5 for this Tribe record, I like Midnight Marauders a bit more but Butter is an all time top 20 hip hop song imo

2024-04-18 13:59:26 +0000 UTCThis sealed the deal, Iβm going to be listening to the rest of A Tribe Called Questβs albums sooner rather than later. I went in a casual fan of Q Tipβs voice but Phife Dawgβs delivery and the backing music were excellent, too. I just wanted to listen to this album over and over but also thought I should pace myself and mix it up with other stuff, too. On the subject of Busta Rhymes, I listened through his discography earlier this year - heβs got some really cool stuff! Itβs easy to get sucked in from his rapid delivery and wild samples and the first few albums all follow this end-of-the-world concept. Incredible performer. And Busta was instantly recognizable on Masked Singer a few years back lol.
