Indie Games Event

Hello everyone! Today we wanted to make a special post, telling you about the experience we had the opportunity to live a few days ago.

As we already mentioned in several previous devlogs, last July we signed up for a very important indie videogame contest in our country: the sixth edition of the “Premios Indie Games”. We were pre-selected with Chronicles and became one of the more than 200 participants this year.

After preparing and sending all the material they asked us to evaluate our game, the organization invited us to the in-person event where the finalists would be revealed, this Friday October 11th.

This event was held in the form of a professional meeting for people from all over the video game industry, whose main theme was the impact and social transformation through video games. They were held in the facilities of the “Polo Nacional de Contenidos Digitales”, a space created especially for the creation of video games and entrepreneurship of developers.

There we had the opportunity to spend the morning among the other participants of the contest. But also, after a brief presentation, we were able to attend a very interesting talk that touched on topics that, as the small team of women developers that we are, concern and interest us: equality and accessibility in video games, and the social impact that these can have.

The speakers were Marina Amores (Blissy), journalist and communicator specialized in video games, Isi Cano, representative of FemDevs and specialist in the application of video games in education, Lucía Herrero, president of Asociación MálagaJam and Diego (Kyuni), creative director and activist for accessibility in video games.

Among the topics discussed, the discrimination that women still suffer in this sector, in their jobs or even in high schools and universities, was pointed out. Nowadays, harassment and the belief that the capabilities of a woman in this sector are not the same as those of men, among many other things, are what cause the low numbers of women developers and in any other sector of the video game. As from our own childhood, we are pushed away because they are “boys' things” and, even when a woman decides to try it, she finds many more obstacles, or she is banished to the more artistic than technological fields.

For all these reasons, several projects that are already active were mentioned, focused above all on reinforcing equality laws in companies and supporting women from the beginning, with special workshops for them in schools and high schools.

Finally, we attended the small gala where the 32 finalists of this year's 9 categories were announced. The level and quality of all the works was what we expect for a competition of this level. In the image you can see an example of them, the four finalists of the Narrative Games category. Personally, I can say that I really liked “Meigas”, an interactive game with click and point mechanics, which deals with a fantasy story of Spanish witches during the time of the Inquisition? Mmmm why could it be? 🤔🤣 With how little we like witches and magic in this team...

As you might have guessed, we were out of luck. But we are happy to have had this opportunity, not only because of the expectations, but also because this has led us to make some improvements that we had been needing for our games (the trailer and the cover of Chronicles) and for the team itself that you will be able to see soon for sure.

Besides, it has been one of our first in-person experiences in this kind of events/contests, apart from the Euskal Encounter that we attend every year. And although we consider it out of our comfort zone, it has made us realize that we have to keep trying in this type of areas, so.... It surely won't be the last time you will have special entries like this one.

Once again, thank you all for your support and for following this path with us. ❤

So nice that we understand each other.... hahaha It was a challenge, but in the end it wasn't bad at all. It's something necessary, to face fears in order to enjoy and learn. We hope you get it too! And yes, maybe one day! It would be a dream for us, haha ❤

Sounds exciting! But I can really unterstand the "out of your comfort zone" thing, I'm also very anxious when it comes to live events. But I think it always is a good opportunity to meet people with the same passion, who understand what you're going through + learn some new things too. I think that a lot of positive can come out of meetings like that and I'm pushing myself to go to at least some of them from time to time. Maybe someday you'll attend an event in germany😎
