Doctor Who 4x2 โ€œThe Fires of Pompeiโ€ FULL REACTION

Comments

I always knew Catherine Tate was funny but never fully appreciated how well she could do drama. And she will just keep getting better. Plus the lack of romantic tension makes it's such a nice change of pace of just having two adult friends sharing adventures together. Can't wait for more. Now I wish you'd do two WHO reactions a week!

When I first watched this episode I liked it but didn't love it. Now I absolutely adore it. The moral dilemma, the performances - Tennant and Tate are just extraordinary actors when they are combined together and considering she was mostly only known for comedy, I really never expected Tate to be able to move me to tears as she does in this episode... (and a number of future ones too...) Season 4: for me 10 out of 13 episodes in this season are truly excellent - with about 4 in a row 10/10s at the end of the season (much like the run of episodes from S03E08 to S03E11 which I also feel like that about). Cannot wait to see what you think too.

Interesting about Nebula๐Ÿ˜„

Timelords only used Time Travel to observe, never to interfere, The Doctor being the exception but when it comes to fixed points in time he knows is meant to happen, he is bound to keep it that way as the consequences could be catastrophic. It mirrors the way everyone worships the Gods in Pompeii and no one would dare question any judgement. Also one of the female disciples, the red haired one was Karen Gillan, plays Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Roman names were taken from old British Latin school textbooks, and my Mum recognised the names while she was watching the episode. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I may be speaking too soon, but I think sheโ€™s my favorite companion already so far๐Ÿ˜

Thank you๐Ÿ˜„ Yeah the Doctor definitely needs a human companion to remind him that there are other options than just what heโ€™s used to doing.

I really love this episode. It changed my mind about Donna forever. I always loved Catherine Tate as a comedian and in particular her sketch show. Her Gran character probably most of all. (Just learnt she is bringing back for a film.) I wasn't sold on her casting at first, as I thought it was going to be a huge mistake. But I quickly had to bow my head and admit very unreservedly I was so very very wrong. I couldn't of been happier about that. Donna became my favourite companion because of what Tate brings to the role. I can already see she will be a real highlight of this series for you. This one you will want to remember for much much much much later on.... ๐Ÿคซ๐Ÿ˜

Hair is looking fabulous Other Boy. This is a wonderful little episode. All throughout the previous 3 series we have seen little glimpses of the Doctor not being the perfect โ€˜heroโ€™, and he isnโ€™t, he is quite a flawed character, often too caught up in his own pomposity and the ancient universal rules of the Time Lord civilisation - rules he still clings to. He tries to live by a โ€˜humanโ€™ moral code but sometimes getsโ€™s it wrong simply because he is not human. This is why he needs โ€œsomeoneโ€. If Donna hadnโ€™t been there he would have left and not returned to save the family. I love it when the show highlights just how conflicted the Doctor is with what he wants to do and what he is allowed to do. โ€œDonโ€™t you think if I could go back I would, but I canโ€™t... I just canโ€™t.โ€ You are right, Donna is awesome. The Doctor was told โ€œShe is returning!โ€ Donna was told โ€œThere is something on your back!โ€

Sheโ€™s really good. I love that sheโ€™s there to โ€œstop himโ€ as she puts it.

So glad you enjoyed this episode. I absolutely love the moral dilemma aspect of it and I love the way Donna challenges The Doctor which provides a different dynamic and perspective. This episode hit the emotional beats really well. Catherine Tate's acting was great.
