Great discussion. Great list! I need to revisit CHICAGO. I was the insufferable nerd (shocking, I know) in the room back in the day who felt that movie had sanitized and slicked up what was originally a gloriously scuzzy musical. But then again, I also thought that about the 1996 revival production that is STILL running on Broadway, so... what the hell do I know? And I'd love to be on CHASING AMY ADAMS when/if they invite me to talk about a good movie! haha

As a gay man a decade or two older than the drafters, I was genuinely surprised and thrilled that this movie (that's I've seen about 100 times, including the first time where I just stayed in my seat to watch the next show after) has the staying power that truly great films have generations onward. I do think Renee Zellweger does get a little overlooked sometimes. The character of Roxy Hart is not supposed to be a great singer. She probably shouldn't be a great dancer either, just decent white girl moves. Her character is about wanting to be a star and stopping at nothing to achieve it, including becoming a notorious murderess. As we all know, it's a commentary on the many ways people without the appropriate talent can become stars: the tabloid age, reality television, the Kardashians, influencers. I felt she bridged that perfectly in her performance--her black dress at the end in "Nowadays" Oscar-worthy on its own. Great job. (Oh, for our next Z-girl, I got to see Rachel as Evita in London and she is everything and "a bag of chips." The outdoor thing totally works. There's a crowd gathered as you enter the theater. The thrill the audience gets seeing thousands out there by intermission on the very impressive camera work give you chills as she greets "her people." She is truly a superstar--with fearless politics.)
