Act 41
Mel
He stared at the snake, a little taken aback. He almost shamefully forgot that the demon had been with him the entire time. The cats surrounding him hissed at the cameo and promptly cleared away in anger.
âDo you think that you have two souls, you shitpouch? Iâve worked so hard for this, just for it all to turn out that I couldâve just offered you a name and address?! Thanks for nothing, you faithless cunt.â
Mel gulped.
âAh, Apep, my old friend. I suspected that youâd be this childâs demon,â Bastet said, amused.
The little snakeâs head turned toward the entity, hissed, and said, âShut your cakehole, Bast. And itâs Lucifer now, thank ya very much. You knew theyâre already taken; why did you play with them like that?â
She smiled. It still looked motherly, but it now contained a hint of demonic mischief. As Mel knew from Lusje, the smugness was more a feeling than a part of her expression. Until this moment he had mentally separated the âgood godsâ from the âbad demonsâ, but now he wasnât so sure anymore.
âI wanted to test their faith in me. And, I wanted to lure you out.â
Mel sank into his chair, wishing he could just slink away.
âFuck you, you fuckinâ fuck nugget, donât toy with my human like that. And donât question their loyalty, bitchtits! Fuck, I shoulda known itâd be bad idea to bring the kid here.â
He sank even deeper, surreptitiously calculating the time itâd take to get from the chair to the door. If he could move quickly and not stumble over any cats, he might just make it in under two seconds.
âOh, how I missed your language, my old friend.â
âStop callinâ me that, twat! You killed me once!â
Oh? Even though the situation continued to grow increasingly uncomfortable, he couldnât help but take notice at Lusjeâs last remark.
âAre you still angry about that? That was thousands of years ago, Lucifer. And, you kind of deserved it, considering you wanted to destroy my father and everything his light shone upon. Plus, you did defecate in my food.â
My god, was that a thing that Lusje did regularly? Mel would have to check everything he ate from now on, especially after any arguments.
âNow, let us not quarrel. It does please me to see you, and I cherish that you introduced me to your precious little human. They are, now, of utmost intrigue to me.â
The snake left Melâs sleeve entirely and curled into a ring on his lap. The demon made a grumpy noise, but did not argue further.
âI havenât seen one of our kind in years. How are you doing?â
Mel felt like he really wasnât supposed to be here right now.
Following another sullen noise, Lusje answered, âCanât complain. Tho, what about you? Livinâ in the shadows canât come easy to such a sunlovinâ thot like you. By the way, love whatcha did with this place, with all the darkness.â
Basted leaned back with a smile, absentmindedly stroking her pregnant middle.
âYou will not trust my words, but I rather enjoy it, most of the time. Sure, most people donât know who I am anymore, but I am now free of expectations and duties, too.â
Mel thought that he saw a glimpse of a smile somewhere on Lusjeâs face.
âIf you need any tips in this sorta life, you know who to call now. Kinda a pro innit, by now. I'll leave you my number.â
Lusje âŠ. Lusje has a phone?!
âAppreciated, old friend.â
âEnough talk, though. Thatâs not why we're here.â
They both paused and looked at Mel again, who really, really wished that he had the repertoire to suddenly vanish in a cloud of steam. A deck of cards sat in his pocket; maybe he could do the old âshuffle in their faces and then runâ trick?
For some reason, he felt like a child who had done something that caused its parents to argue.
âI know,â Bastet said, âbut I still require payment.â
âYouâre not really suggestinâ that I hand over our deal, are you, pussycat?â
The tall woman gestured her hand in a derogatory way. âOf course not. I know how important pacts are. But I do wish to get at least a tasteâŠâ
Melâs face burned quite hot all of a sudden.
âPFFT! Good luck. Theyâre not that kinda person for stuff like that.â
Bastet stood from her semi-seating position on the table and walked past Mel, planting herself behind him and gently stroking his hair and shoulders. Shivers ran down his spine again, like flashes of heat and cold clashing against one another.
âI figured as much, but I can also sense their devotion. You want me, too, isnât that right, my dear child?â
Mel wanted to answer, but didnât know how; for the first time in his life, he felt stage fright.
âI would love to dip into your perplexing ambiguous soul, Melchior. Youâve made a pact with one of us, yet I donât see greed in your heart. I see pain, but no revenge. Yet, at the same time, you donât care for the world, only for those who seek pleasure within your abilities. The song of your soul⊠you neither strive for light, nor darkness. Neither the sun, nor the moon. Youâre in-between. Your spirit sings a melody of the stars. How unconventional. Beautiful.â
He closed his eyes, though his eyelids flickered. It became hard to breathe. Her dark voice lulled him, proclaimed him, allured him. He wanted to obey this goddess. To please her.
âStop charminâ the kid,â Lusje threatened.
âOh, but I am not. I am offering nothing but mere gentleness. Something you clearly deprive the poor soul of, judging by the way you talk to them.â
âDonât criticize the way I keep my humans. I donâ do 'kindâ, itâs not my thing, ok, do-goody arseclown? We have our own dynamic.â
Bastet didnât answer. Insead, her hands glided down from Melâs shoulders, over his chest, and down to his lower torso, where they came to rest. Her face now hovered very close to his cheek.
âYou donât understand how much I wish these were of mine,â she whispered hungrily while gently stroking his abdomen. It kindled nameless emotions in Mel that were hard to bear.
âOr, how much I would love for you to gift my body with my next young.â
âI⊠I canât--â Mel finally was able, somehow, to conjure his first words again.
âShh,â she silenced, getting back up while raising one finger in the process of laying it gently against his mouth, âI can make you able to.â
Melâs head started to spin.
âStop confusinâ the poor bastard. Theyâre already chronically confused, Bast. Look, I brought you something, I think that should suffice for your little - and if I might add, not very important - bit of info.â
There was a soft thump from the direction of the table, and when Mel opened his eyes again, a plastic bag full of green stuff laid there, right next to the crystal ball. Was that⊠weed?
âLucifer, you miserable wretch! I just stopped taking it!â Bastet exclaimed, and for the first time, her voice sounded genuinely agitated.
âAnd you will again. Itâs some of the best kind, I made sure of it.â
Bastet sat down again in the opposite chair, grabbed the bag, and opened it. At first she sniffed skeptically, then she licked her finger and dipped it inside, only to take it out again while covered in green and dispatch it into her mouth.
After a few seconds of tasting, she closed her eyes and leaned back, stroking her belly in a satisfied fashion. A purring seemed to emit from her, but it also may have come from one of her many cats.
âAlright, Iâll bite. Her nameâs Bente Morris, Iâll give you the address.â
âKnew youâd like the stuff.â
She took a pen and wrote down something on one of her tarot cards.
âMy offer still stands, though, Melchior. Not as a payment, but as an invitation. If you ever want to experience the all-loving touch of a god who knows how to properly treat their disciples, or how it feels to fill up somebody else with child, or even maybe to just simply clean my apartment - you now know where to find me.â
She gave him the card and gently brushed his fingers. He knew that he ,eventually, would not be able to withstand these invitations.
